Why block the river?

Our science grant work has begun!  We have been busy learning about dams, berms, channeling water and rerouting water.  Why do people need to control the flow of water?  Ask your child. they might surpirse you with their answer!

  1. Here are some RHS student responses.

Oliver: When out of control, water may be a destructive and lethal force. When in control, water can be used to create clean, renewable energy through the means of hydroelectric methods and dams. Also, if the water in a river abstains from going out of control, habitats of riverside wildlife will be preserved. It is our responsibility to keep Earth as clean and unharmed as possible.

Noah: We build dams on rivers so that we can use the water to generate electricity. The water is dropped down a tunnel in the dam, then it hits a giant fan, turns it, and generates electricity.

Joe: People need to control the flow of water because the water could be dangerous and poisonous and we don’t want people to die from water.

Hunter: Water is controlled for a variety of reasons, but the main one is for energy. Rivers are dammed and the water running through them is harnessed and used as hydropower.

Meaghan: People need to control the water so that it’s not being wasted when it’s not needed or being used. It also can be dangerous when someone drinks it if it’s contaminated.

Pat: We need to control the flow of water because the water could be very dangerous if it’s not protected. A lot of people could die from the poisonous water we could experience if we do not control the flow of it.

Amanda: Canals could be a good reason to control water because it could help with trade.

Sabrina: We need to control the flow of water because it will help prevent flooding. The Hoover Dam is a good example of this. Without a water dam to control the flow of water, then there will be a lot of problems that need to be solved.

Jack: After many hours of hard work and things of that nature, my research has led me to the conclusion that blocking the river is very dangerous. Water is a natural force that needs to be able to move and flow at its own rate. Blocking the river is like mixing chocolate milk and lemonade; it just doesn't work.

Ronnie: Because water is very powerful, and I think if water is not regulated, we would be under water.

Cayla: People need to control the flow of water to stop flooding.

Preston: I think they want to control the water to build new things like buildings, like I think they dam things to open up new spots. I also think the reason is because some people still use water mills for power so if they block off some water they get more current for more power.

Aubrey: Damming the river could be used to generate electricity.

    1. student 27: I agree with Jack because I think water will cause more problems if it doesn't go where it wants to go. How does water make electricity?

student 25: I also agree with Jack because I think water will go where it wants to go even if you reroute it. It still could go a different way and then it could cause flooding problems. I also agree with the other students because it's a better way to get electricity. It saves the environment.

student 32: If you reroute water it can kill fish.

student 23: What is the deepest part of the soil?

student 20: If we would just let water alone the earth would be a much better place because when dams broke there wouldn't be sudden floods and maybe we could know when to expect floods like in Ancient Egypt.
